When Patients Become the Boss

In the article “What Happens When the Patient Becomes the Boss” it mentions the lack in inclusion of technology in health care. Doctors are not always able to keep up with the latest technology nor are they always taught how to use it. It mentions that sometimes patients have to do their own research on what conditions they have in order to be able to ask the doctors the right questions with the limited time they have during their appointment. They gave the example of Christi Shaw who had to do her own research when her sister was diagnosed with cancer. She had been told that there was nothing they could do to help her sister. In her own research she was able to find a clinical trial of a drug that might have been able to help her sister. After consulting the doctor, they agreed to try it resulting in her sister’s cancer to significantly reduce within a month’s time. WIth the advancements of technology, the health care system should work on including and updating the technology in their practice. In addition, more patients should try to do some research into their health and make themselves more familiar with their health.

My name is Julissa Cobos and I am a Sociology major at CSUEB. My preferred pronouns are she/her/hers. I grew up and still live in Hayward. A few important things about me are that I am passionate about helping others, love to be outdoors, and meeting new people. What drew me to Medical Sociology was the fact that is was a class related to the health field. I have always been interested in health and I look forward to learning this semester. What I am most looking forward to this year is finally getting my drivers license- I know I'm late to the game.

  1. I like how you were able to show both point of views from the doctor and patient. I agree that some patients have to do research in order to make sure they get the care they need. I have had to do that before and it made my doctor visit helpful. I wonder how soon advanced techonology will be incorporated in healthcare?

  2. Hi Julissa. Technology can be useful at times, especially when you are curious or need a quick answer. So I think it is interesting to learn that the patient from what you have stated found a treatment that may be able to help them. I liked how you were able to demonstrate an example of the idea on research

  3. Hi Julissa,
I personally do my own research sometimes, before I go visit a doctor. I really listen to my body, and let my doctor know that something isn’t right, even if they do testing. I luckily have a doctor who really listens to what I am saying, and has me tested for everything just to weigh out every option. I do not know more than my doctor, but I do know when I feel a 100% and when I do not feel like myself at all. I think it’s important that both patient and doctor communicate effectively with one another. It’s very important for doctors and patients to establish relationships amongst one another. It’s not only reassuring and trusting for the patient, but it’s beneficial for the doctor as well to understand that patients body.

  4. Hi Julissa, I like that you chose this topic because its interesting to hear how technology is changing many things. At the same time I have research many of my symptoms when I do not want to go to the doctors and sometimes it may get a person very worried with the information. I do agree that I have had time where a doctor has such sort time to assist me, which is not enough time to ask many question, but I feel that it something that we as patients should not have to go through. There has also been many times where I have gone to the doctors and all they have done is to advice me to use a over the counter product and to come back if it worsens which is why I like to research so that I do not waste my time in going to the doctors. Have any of these situations happened to you before?
